5 Smoothie Ingredients You Need to Know About

I love smoothies for their convenience, simplicity and variety. Oh and not to mention they can be oh-so-satisfyingly delicious. If you’re looking for new ways to shake up your morning routine try one of these smoothie ingredients today.

A tasteless collagen powder that helps to promote collagen production. It can be added to any smoothie but I prefer to add it to a smoothie with citrus (lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit) to increase absorption of this important nutrient for the strength and appearance of your hair, skin and nails. I like to add it to a smoothie or fresh-pressed juice with grapefruit, lemon, orange, apple, cucumber, romaine and water.

Chlorella

Nature’s multivitamin this algae is a good source of iron, immune supporting vitamin A, amino acids and the anti-oxidant chlorophyll. For a tropical twist, add this algae powder to a smoothie with leafy greens, pineapple and mango or try it in the smoothie below.

Black Beans

If you’re looking for a fibre and protein rich smoothie with a fudgy texture then black beans need to go in your next smoothie. Rinse and drain black beans and add 1/4 cup to a smoothie with banana and cocoa powder for a decedent, fudgy treat. Take your smoothie to this next level by adding a shot of espresso or 1/2 cup cold-brewed coffee. For the best texture, blend the beans with your liquid of choice first, until smooth, then add remaining ingredients and blend until combined.

Looking for a natural energy boost? Up your energy game, use 1 cup chilled green tea as the liquid in your favourite green smoothie.

Lucuma

This Peruvian fruit is a low-glycemic sweetener that will satisfy your sweet tooth with its maple syrup-like taste. It pairs well with chocolate and cinnamon, tropical fruits like mango and citrus like lemon.
